about

First off, the song title (and EP title) are taken from Pulp Fiction, from the scene when Samuel L. Jackson quotes that Bible verse where he gets all intense and says "And I will strike down with great vengeance and furious anger, those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers." I'm not even religious, I just always thought that was badass. And kind of relevant considering in 2016, we elected someone whose mission seems to be to poison and destroy us.

After the election, I was so damn depressed and angry. I even thought of giving up on the band, because I felt like I didn't have the heart to sing about politics anymore. My wife Amy convinced me otherwise--she told me I should write an entire album about it. While we ended up with only an EP, I'm pretty happy with the results.

As for this particular song, it's about how we elected a snake oil salesman and the rust belt appeared to buy into his bullshit, but the truth is, their jobs aren't going to suddenly come back. Trump's attempts to lower taxes and regulations aren't going to suddenly re-open all the factories that were shuttered in the 80's. And in the end we will be worse off.

This is one of the heaviest Tracing Wires songs, and a personal favorite of mine. -Tim

lyrics

In 2016, America elected
A glorified game show host
Racist, sexist, charlatan
Thanks to a system designed to coddle slaveholders
GOD DAMN THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE
(Fuck, I hope we learn our lesson)

What the fuck have you done?
You've fucking sold us out!
Selling out your brothers
You are selling out your sisters
You've been taken for a fool
By a snake oil salesman
You've followed the pied piper
Straight to the cliff's edge

All for an offer of safety
And a promise of yesteryear
I'm sorry your factory shut down 30 years ago
But your jobs aren't coming back
No, your jobs aren't coming back
THEY ARE NEVER COMING BACK
THEY ARE NEVER COMING BACK

Your leader will lead you off the fucking cliff
And all we can do is watch you fall
And hope it never happens again
Never happens again
Never happens again
Never happens again

You'll shove aside minorities
And ignore hateful rhetoric
'Cause you fell for the tricks
Of an insane billionaire
A member of the elite
One-percent that you hate so much
Yet you think that he is
Here to save the working class

He doesn't give a fuck about you
Or your small decaying down
Decimated by automation
And corporate greed
He embodies the person who
Sent your jobs away
Now you think he's here to save you?
HOW FUCKING GULLIBLE ARE YOU?

Your leader will lead you off the fucking cliff
And all we can do is watch you fall
And hope it never happens again
Never happens again
Never happens again
Never happens again

Your leader will lead you off the fucking cliff
And all we can do is watch you fall
And hope it never happens again
Never happens again
Never happens again
Never happens again

Reap what you fucking sow
Reap what you fucking sow
Reap what you fucking sow
Reap what you fucking sow
REAP WHAT YOU FUCKING SOW
REAP WHAT YOU FUCKING SOW
REAP WHAT YOU FUCKING SOW
REAP WHAT YOU FUCKING SOW
